Senator Boxer: Celebrating Black History Month

Statement

Date: Jan. 31, 2011

Dear Friend:

Every February, Americans celebrate Black History Month in recognition of the rich contributions of African-Americans to our nation.

This year's theme -- "The History of Black Economic Empowerment" -- honors the often unsung generations of African-Americans who fought against prejudice, poverty, and discrimination. This month we remember the hard work of those who came before us and helped teach this country the importance of improving the fortunes of all Americans, regardless of race, class, or background.

Especially in these tough times, we must remember that lesson as we work toward a better future for all Americans. During Black History Month and beyond, I hope you will join me in honoring the memories of the many African-Americans who shape our nation's past, present, and future. Their accomplishments are an integral part of American history and should be celebrated and shared -- not just this month, but every day of the year.

Sincerely,
Barbara Boxer, US Senator, California
U.S. Senator Barbara Boxer
