Pitts on Attack of Gay Rights Activist in Uganda

Location: Washington, DC

Gay rights advocate David Kato was recently killed in Uganda. Authorities are investigating the circumstances of the murder, as Kato was publicly threatened by a Ugandan publication last year.

Rep. Pitts' statement:

"Last year, I stood with my colleagues on the Human Rights Commission to condemn threats and violence directed at gay rights activists in Uganda and call on the government to reject legislation imposing harsh penalties for homosexuality. Activist David Kato's recent murder needs to be fully investigated as he was placed on a 'hit list' by Ugandan press just last year.

"I once again call on the Ugandan government to protect peaceful activists and prosecute death threats directed at them. I also hope that Christians in Uganda will honor speak out against violence."
