Statement from Congresswoman Hirono in Recognition of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Day

Location: Oahu, Hawaii

Congresswoman Mazie K. Hirono (D-Hawaii) released the following statement today in recognition of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Day, which is observed on Monday, January 17, 2011:

On January 17, 2011, the 25th anniversary of this national holiday, we again honor the legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Dr. King fought for and lived his life according to his principles of interracial cooperation and equality, global peace and justice, and social change through nonviolent resolution of conflict.

We must not forget Dr. King's words, "Nonviolence is a powerful and just weaponÂ… which cuts without wounding and ennobles the man who wields it." Let his wisdom inspire all of us, in Hawaii and throughout the nation, to honor the fallen and the heroes of Arizona and our nation by moving forward with integrity, understanding, and cooperation.
