Congressman John Carney (D-DE) issued the following statement today to commemorate Martin Luther King, Jr. Day:

"Today, we celebrate the birthday of Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., who would have turned 82 on Saturday. Each year, we take this day to reflect on the enormous impact Dr. King has had on our country.

"In the wake of the tragic shooting in Tucson, all Americans should look to Dr. King for inspiration. He overcame enormous obstacles without using violence, and he taught us to treat our fellow citizens with dignity and respect, no matter their backgrounds or beliefs.

"I encourage all Americans to honor Dr. King's legacy by working each day to better themselves and ensure that future generations inherit a world of peace and prosperity."
