"The September 11th attacks impacted many in my home state of New Jersey, so I was especially honored to participate in the House Armed Services Committee fact-finding mission to Guantanamo Bay. Since 2002, the Guantanamo Bay detention facility has held some of the world's most dangerous terrorists, many of whom helped plan the terrorist attacks on September 11, 2001. Our tour of these state-of-the-art facilities reconfirmed for me that Guantanamo is the best place to house terrorist detainees. It is a first-class facility managed in a first-class manner.
At Guantanamo, millions of taxpayer dollars have been spent to ensure humane and secure facilities for detention and prosecution of detainees, and it would be a grave mistake to close Guantanamo and bring these terrorists to the United States. The American people don't support it, and neither do I.
I was also struck by the high morale and professionalism of the thousands of U.S. military personnel stationed at Guantanamo and want to thank them for their dedicated service to our nation."
