Congressman Jim Himes (CT-4) released the following statement in response to President Obama's State of the Union address this evening to a joint session of Congress.
"President Obama was forward-thinking, pragmatic, and gracious this evening. He reminded us tonight that the "idea of America endures' and laid out a specific proposals that will repower our efforts to lead our country through the new challenges and opportunities we face.
"I particularly appreciated his focus on education and innovation, which are the keys to prosperity--now and in the future. As someone who was educated in the public schools, I know personally what a solid education can do. We've all seen innovation transform everything from how we get our medical care to how we make a phone call. Our country faces immense challenges, and there is no silver bullet. But if we use education and innovation as the foundation for our path forward, we can and will rebuild America.
"As the President said, "We will move forward together or not at all.' I look forward to working in earnest with my friends in both chambers and in both parties to tackle the greatest challenges of our generation--from making us the leader in science and math education again; to fixing the tax code to make it fairer for both emerging businesses and individuals; to protecting our health care, our national security, and our economic competitiveness. Reducing our debt while making the investments we need to fix our schools and rebuild our highways, railways, and networks is no small task, but it is our only choice."
