I fully recognize that the future of America is linked to the successful education of our children. I believe in order to prepare the next generation with the responsibility of running our country and continuing the prosperity of our economy, we must provide them with the best teachers, tools, and learning environments. We must always balance the need for standards and accountability with the rights of students and teachers while preserving local control of K-12 education. And in a time of ever more tight budgets, where spending restraint is necessary to decrease the federal deficit, innovative and effective education policy must be the guiding principle.
The new Democrat Administration and the committees of jurisdiction in the Congress will be the driving forces in developing federal education policy in the 111th Congress. I look forward to working with my colleagues to address any lapses in federal leadership and aid for our nation's schools, including the elementary, secondary and post-secondary education institutions in the 44th Congressional District of California, and the next generation tasked with maintaining our position in the world.
