Rep. Garrett Issues Statement on Newark Airport Baggage Security Concerns
May 10, 2004 - WASHINGTON, D.C. - Today, Rep. Scott Garrett (NJ-05) issued the following statement regarding the baggage screening security concerns at Newark's Liberty International Airport:
"Thousands of bags are loaded onto planes at Newark Liberty International Airport every day without being scanned for explosives. This is unacceptable. Here in the U.S., we must be right 100 percent of the time, whereas terrorists need to be right just one time.
"We cannot compromise the security of our loved ones. We need to be implementing thorough security screening procedures, allowing for passengers to feel secure and safe on their flights.
"America must remain vigilant. We must secure our citizens now, not wait for the foreseeable future to implement security screening procedures. We must make certain our checkpoints are well-staffed, and that all baggage is properly inspected before being put on a plane. Our citizens deserve no less."
