A Time of Remembrance for a True American Hero
June 7, 2004, Washington, D.C. - On the passing of former President Ronald Reagan, Rep. Scott Garrett (NJ-05) made the following statement:
"Our nation has suffered a tremendous loss with the death of President Ronald Reagan. Today is a sad day in American history and one that will lead to days and weeks of mourning for one of the greatest leaders our country has known. As we take this time to mourn the loss of our 40th President, we should also celebrate his historic and heroic life.
Ronald Reagan exemplified the best qualities we could want in our leaders. He was compassionate, caring, visionary and strong. He took our nation from a "crisis in confidence" to a country the entire world would view as the standard bearer for justice and liberty.
Millions of people worldwide owe their freedoms to President Reagan. Ronald Reagan's Presidency was marked not just by his strength and leadership, but also by his unwavering belief in America - which rekindled our spirit and made us all proud to be Americans. In this time of national mourning, may we each take time to reflect on the life of a great president and historic leader.
May the legacy of Ronald Reagan live on as long as we are proud to raise our stars and stripes and call ourselves the United States of America.
My family and I join all Americans in mourning the passing of President Reagan. Our deepest sympathies go out to President Reagan's wife, Nancy, and the entire Reagan family during their time of loss."
