McIntyre Introduces Lumbee Recognition Bill

U.S. Representative Mike McIntyre introduced legislation on the first day of the 112th Congress to grant the Lumbee Indians federal recognition. This bill is identical to the one that has passed the U.S. House twice in the last four years -- 2007 and 2009 - under McIntyre's leadership.

Congressman McIntyre stated, "The fight for Lumbee recognition will continue, and we have hit the ground running! It is time for discrimination to end and recognition to begin! For over 100 years, the Lumbee people have been seeking the dignity and respect they deserve from the federal recognition. I will do all I can to pass this important bill."

HR 27 has been referred to the House Committee on Natural Resources.

"The historical record is persuasive and compelling that for the last 200 years the Lumbees have functioned as an Indian tribe and have been recognized as such by state and local authorities. It is time they achieve federal recognition." said Representative McIntyre.

Congressman McIntyre is a member of the Native American Congressional Caucus.
