Ushering in the 112th Congress
I am excited to have the opportunity to serve the people of my hometown, and I am honored to be a part of the 112th Congress. This upcoming session brings changes in leadership, but it doesn''t change what I have set to out to achieve on behalf of my constituents.

Please read my statement about the start of the 112th Congress and watch this video of my daughter joining me on the floor of the House of Representatives.]

Attempted Repeal of Health Care Reform
While the new Republican majority claimed an interest in bipartisanship, their efforts to repeal health care reform prove otherwise. This blatant, political play to the far right wing of their party has no chance of going anywhere in the Senate, and it's a waste of time when we should be focusing on putting people back to work.
Because of the new law, children with pre-existing conditions cannot be denied coverage, and young people under 26 are able to get insurance through their parents' plans. And our seniors are finally getting the financial help they need to pay for their prescription drugs. Any effort to repeal the law will also destroy these common-sense provisions that are helping Americans right now.

I'm ready to work with anyone who is legitimately willing to improve the law-but this stunt by the Republicans is pure Washington politics.

Jobs Report
As Republicans claim that health care reform is killing jobs, this week, we received news that proves otherwise. The labor market improved notably in the month of December as employment increased by 103,000 and the unemployment rate decreased to 9.4 percent. Although we still have a ways to go, one thing is for certain: our investments have reversed the trend of catastrophic job losses and put this country on the road to recovery.

In the month President Obama was inaugurated, the economy lost nearly 800,000 jobs. In contrast in 2010, every single month posted private sector job growth over a broad range of industries. Furthermore, business and consumer spending are growing as manufacturing activity and disposable income for American families continues to rise. While the employment situation is clearly improving, I will remain focused on the critical issue of creating jobs for Hoosiers.
