Congresswoman Ileana Ros-Lehtinen voted for legislation that would extend the 2001 tax cuts to all Americans as well as extend unemployment benefits for those who have yet to find a job during these tough economic times. The final vote tally was 277 to 148. As a result of this vote, Ileana issued the following statement:

"I am very pleased that our Congressional leaders and the Administration were able to find agreement on extending the 2001 tax cuts for all taxpaying Americans as well as extend unemployment benefits for those who are not able to find a job during this tepid economic recovery.

We are in the midst of the worst economic downturn in more than 70 years; our economic recovery has been anemic at best; millions are unemployed and can't find a suitable employment opportunity; millions more have lost their homes due to foreclosures; home prices continue to drop and after a horrible housing downturn, we have yet to reach the bottom of the real estate market.

This is the wrong time to raise taxes on anyone, and certainly the wrong time to raise taxes on our small businesses, which will be negatively impacted if taxes are raised.

I am also pleased that the unemployment benefits will be extended to so many who want to work but have been unable to find jobs in this terrible economy.

I am interested in assuring that our economic future is better than the current mess in which we are presently in, and these steps will assure we are on the right path to get us there."
