Rehberg Praises Implementation of Amtrak Policy to Allow Gun Transportation

Press Release

Date: Dec. 16, 2010
Location: Washington, DC

Montana's Congressman, Denny Rehberg, released the following statement as new guidelines go into effect allowing legal gun owners to transport firearms on Amtrak trains. Rehberg, a member of the 2nd Amendment Task Force, introduced the Amtrak Secure Transportation of Firearms Act of 2009. Similar language was incorporated in the FY2010 Transportation, Housing and Urban Development Appropriations bill, which became law. The policy, which allows firearms to be transported in checked luggage, will accommodate hunters from around the country who want to come to Montana by train, creating jobs and boosting the economy.

"If you can bring a gun in checked luggage on a private airliner, there's absolutely no reason you shouldn't be able to do likewise on a train. This is about respecting Americans who avail themselves of their Second Amendment rights and not treating them like second-class citizens. Moreover, by giving out-of-state hunters a convenient way to travel to Montana to hunt, we're supporting jobs and boosting our economy. I'm pleased that my legislation is going to make a difference."
