Representative Steve Rothman (D-NJ) released the following statement on the DREAM Act (H.R. 5281) which passed the U.S. House of Representatives by a vote of 216-198 on December 8, 2010:
I was proud to support this common sense legislation to give hundreds of thousands of young people the freedom to pursue a college education, serve in the U.S. Armed Forces, and have an opportunity at the American dream. Children of illegal immigrants who have been raised in the United States should not be punished for choices their parents made, and the DREAM Act will ensure that they have a path to becoming productive members of our society who will contribute to our great nation.
The United States must redouble our efforts to stop illegal immigration and pursue comprehensive immigration reform. This bill is a step in the right direction, but our government still has much more progress to make.
I will continue working with House Leadership to ensure that we address illegal immigration while providing compassion and a responsible pathway to citizenship for those who are already here.
