Congressman Adrian Smith (R-NE), a member of the House Immigration Reform Caucus, today voted against a bill which would grant illegal immigrants - some of whom could be as old as 30 - legal status based on two years of military service or admittance to an institution of higher education.
"While illegal immigration is a problem in need of an aggressive and comprehensive solution, the answer is not to legalize the illegal immigrants currently residing in the United States. This bill was never vetted through committee hearings and was forced to a vote during a lame duck session for purely political reasons.
"Our nation was founded by immigrants who sought a better life for themselves and their families. This tradition shouldn't be diminished by awarding amnesty to those who break our laws," Smith said.
