We need to give our police officers the best tools and funding available to serve Staten Island and Brooklyn. This is why I cosponsored the Community Oriented Policing Services (COPS) Improvements Act of 2009. COPS will put 5,750 new police on the streets of New York City. The bill authorizes grant money for schools to hire resource officers and establish local partnerships with the police to combat crime, gangs, and drug activities. It also will offer grant money to prevent illegal drug activities, establish criminal gang enforcement task forces, and help develop new technologies to assist state and local law enforcement agencies in crime prevention and training.
