Congressman Herger released the following statement in response to the agreement on the U.S. -- South Korea trade accord. According to government estimates, the long stalled South Korea Free Trade Agreement will increase U.S. exports in all sectors of the economy adding an estimated $12 billion to U.S. GDP. Herger's comments follow below:

"This is a major breakthrough for the U.S. economy and American workers. With unemployment on the rise and economic recovery in the U.S. stalled, free trade agreements like this one will provide a much needed boost for businesses to sell more goods and services and help support and create jobs here at home. This is especially good news for Northern California, one of the richest agricultural regions in the world, which will benefit directly from increased agriculture exports to South Korea as a result of lower tariffs and the elimination of barriers to U.S. exports. Although it is frustrating that a final agreement and the economic benefits that come with it took so long to finalize, I am pleased that this important step has been taken. Increased access to the South Korea market is essential to maintaining America's competitiveness in the global market. It is my hope that this agreement, as well as the other two stalled trade pacts with Colombia and Panama, are considered by Congress as soon as possible."
