Congressman Leonard Lance believes we need a national energy policy that reduces our dependence on foreign oil, ensures our national security and leads to a path toward cleaner energy. That means increasing production of American-made energy in an environmentally safe way while promoting conservation and greater efficiency.

Reducing America's Dependence on Foreign Oil
In 1970, we imported 24 percent of our oil; today that figure is 70 percent. America's dependence on foreign oil is a threat to our national security and economy.

We must reduce our dependence on foreign oil by exploring domestic sources of energy in an environmentally safe way and building new refineries

Following New Jersey's Investments in Nuclear Energy
Nuclear power must be a major part of our nation's national energy plan. New Jersey gets nearly 50 percent of its energy from nuclear power.

Congressman Leonard Lance supports legislation that would allow the building of more nuclear power plants to produce usable electricity so that more states could benefit from this clean alternative energy.

Investing in Renewable Energy
New Jersey is one of the nation's leaders in developing alternative sources of energy. That's why Congressman Lance voted for legislation that would invest in research and development of clean and renewable fuels like solar and wind power as well as alternative fuels such as ethanol and bio-diesel.

Encouraging Conservation Efforts
Voluntary conservation programs and greater efficiency should be part of any balanced energy plan. That's why Congressman Lance supports the 2008 law raising fuel economy standards for cars and trucks for the first time in more than 30 years.

Holding Big Oil Accountable
We must also hold Big Oil accountable by cracking down on price-gouging and eliminating unnecessary taxpayer subsidies for the oil industry.
