Growing up on a family dairy farm outside of Holton, I saw first-hand the benefits and challenges of rural life. Representing the interests of agricultural producers is a responsibility I take very seriously.
Farmers and ranchers in the Second District produce the safest and most abundant food supply in the world. It is important that they have fair and predictable farm programs that provide a strong safety net under them. The Farm Bill that was passed in June 2008 needs to be implemented the way Congress intended. Additionally, the men and women who produce it need to be able to sell their goods for a profit. Countries need access to our markets, and we need access to theirs.
The challenges facing farmers and ranchers are many, ranging from tax issues and environmental regulation to volatile markets and a shrinking number of young people returning to production agriculture. I am committed to supporting the agriculture industry so that we are able to produce a safe and abundant food and fiber supply here at home and not be reliant on foreign nations like we are for our energy.
