Dodd Applauds Yale's Decision to Return Machu Picchu Artifcats to the People of Peru

Senator Chris Dodd (D-CT) released the following statement after it was announced that Yale has agreed to return the artifacts from Machu Picchu.

"For years, I have worked with Yale and Peru to seek a resolution to the disagreement over the artifacts discovered at Machu Picchu, and housed at Yale's Peabody Museum," said Dodd. "I applaud Yale's decision to return the Machu Picchu artifacts to their rightful owners. These artifacts do not belong to any government, to any institution, or to any university -- they belong to the people of Peru. Now future generations of Peruvians and visitors to that country will have access to this rich history."

The artifacts, currently being housed at Yale's Peabody Museum, were discovered by Hiram Bingham nearly 100 years ago and will be sent back to Peru starting early next year to remain at the San Pedro de Abad University in Cusco.

As a senior member of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, and the Chairman of its Subcommittee on Latin America, Dodd has been instrumental in helping to seek a resolution between Yale and Peru.
