Reyes Statement on Republicans' Vote to Block Unemployment Insurance Extension

Congressman Silvestre Reyes (D-TX) released the following statement today after Republicans blocked an extension of unemployment insurance benefits:

"While Republicans fight to preserve tax cuts for the richest Americans, today they blocked an extension of unemployment insurance for millions of families who are struggling to find work.

"Unemployment insurance is an important lifeline for individuals who have been laid off and are trying to provide for their families during this difficult time. In El Paso, nearly 17,000 unemployed individuals currently receive unemployment insurance, and approximately 8,000 may lose their insurance if an extension is not approved. This would put many El Paso families in financial jeopardy, as they will be unable to pay the bills and meet their most basic needs. Although our economy is on the right track, we cannot ignore the fact that millions of Americans are still struggling to find jobs, and a temporary extension is necessary. It would be irresponsible to turn our backs on those Americans who want to work and are trying hard to make ends meet.

"Nearly 90 percent of Republicans voted to deny an extension for those whose insurance is set to expire. As Republicans fight for the interests of the wealthy and ignore the needs of the middle class, it is clear that the priorities of the Republican-led Congress next session will return to the same failed policies of the Bush Administration that resulted in record deficits and the worst economic recession since the Great Depression.

"Democrats will continue working to rebuild our economy and support families who have been adversely affected by job losses. The Democratic-led Congress will work to provide an extension of unemployment insurance once again when the Congress returns to session the week of November 29th."
