Veterans Day Statement from Governor Culver

Governor Chet Culver today issued the following statement in observance of Veterans Day tomorrow.

"Veterans Day is a time for us to honor the brave men and women who have dedicated themselves to serving our state and country. We salute those who have worn the uniform and we extend our heartfelt thanks for their legacy of freedom here in America and abroad.

"Tomorrow we pause to remember that freedom comes at a great cost. Veterans Day was first observed in 1919 to honor those Americans who served, and in some cases died for, their country. More than eighty years after that first celebration, we still pause on the eleventh hour of the eleventh day of the eleventh month, to honor the sacrifices of those who came before us, those who are with us, and those who will come after us.

"As we reflect on those who have served in the past, let us honor the courageous men and women who are serving their country today, especially those in Iraq and Afghanistan. They are our inspiration and they embody Iowa's commitment to service. We particularly recognize the 2,800 Iowa soldiers who are part of the Iowa National Guard's largest single overseas deployment since World War II. All Iowans join these families in praying for their safe return. To those who have lost loved ones in service to our nation, you are in our thoughts and prayers. To our veterans, and to their families who have also sacrificed much, we deeply thank you for the gifts you have given all Americans.

"The Culver/Judge Administration has been proud to support our veterans, from investing in the Iowa Veterans' Home and expanding the Veterans' Trust Fund to becoming the first state to act on all 10 Department of Defense recommendations for supporting military families. It has been our privilege to work with citizens, veterans' advocacy groups, and the Legislature to make sure Iowa veterans' needs are met and their service is honored.

"So, on Veterans Day tomorrow, we ask that all Iowans keep our soldiers, sailors, airmen and marines, and their families, in our thoughts and prayers, and keep the memory of those who fought and sacrificed for freedom in our hearts."
