Issue Position

I have always been a strong fiscal conservative, and I have been a vocal opponent of the most costly bills of the past few years including TARP, the Obama Stimulus, the Bush Stimulus, Cap and Trade, and ObamaCare. Additionally, when I served as Chairman of the Legislative Branch Appropriations Subcommittee, I was the only chairman to cut spending in my bill. I believe that commitment to conservative government spending is a key element to a successful independent nation and I fear where the current administration's lack of attention to this principle may lead us.

A major cause for concern right now is Social Security and Medicare's unfunded liabilities. Unfunded liabilities are the difference between the amount of money promised to a program and the actual amount of tax revenue allocated to it. In 2054, when today's college students are set to retire, Social Security and Medicare will require one-third of America's earnings to stay afloat. If we do not take action now, in thirty years these programs will consume one-half of all taxpayer money, drastically reducing the federal government's ability to carry out its routine duties, such as providing for the defense of our country, financing public education, and maintaining our nation's roads, railways, and utility infrastructures.
