America Owes Much to Veterans

Press Release

From the militiamen who sought to establish our independence from Great Britain to the soldiers, sailors, airmen, and marines who continue to preserve our freedom, the United States has sustained a military that is unparalleled in capability and integrity. These brave men and women have and continue to make sacrifices that far surpass a citizen's normal call of duty. While a simple "thank you" or day of honor could never fully express our gratitude, Veterans Day offers a way to collectively honor our nation's Veterans.

I am very proud to represent the Veterans of Georgia's 11th Congressional District whose devotion and service provides a daily inspiration to me and acts as a reminder of the dedication it takes to keep our great nation safe. Our Veterans are a model of character in American society and deserve the highest appreciation and respect from the people they protect.

This day of recognition serves as a powerful reminder of how America's ideals have been preserved through the service of our Armed Forces, but today should also serve to underscore America's commitment to Veterans and their families.

As a former Member of the House Armed Services Committee, I take great pride in fighting for those who have fought for us. During my tenure in Congress, I have authored and supported legislation that continues to solidify our nation's commitment to the brave men and women who have selflessly served our country. With our Veterans' best interests in mind, I fought relentlessly to bring a Veterans' clinic to Rome and to ensure the promises made to our servicemen and women upon their entry to the military are indeed kept. I have the utmost respect for our Veterans and active duty personnel and believe it is my duty as a Member of Congress to enact legislation that would help provide for them and their families. Put simply, it is my responsibility given that they have dedicated their lives to serving our nation.

With more than 150,000 of our sons and daughters currently deployed in places like Afghanistan and Iraq, sustaining support for them when they return home is as important as ever. Their persistence against terrorism abroad helps deter threats on our own soil, and I am proud of the individuals who labor steadfastly for our freedom and security. Make no mistake, the liberty we hold dear as a democracy has and will continue to be under duress. However, our active duty men and women are on the front lines and are a testament to our values and our form of government. When they return home, they deserve our utmost support; as they live out their lives as Veterans, they deserve our utmost respect.

Let us all take time to thank a Veteran and remember those who have made the ultimate sacrifice during this Veterans Day. Our nation's values have been preserved and our posterity secured through the sacrifices of the selfless individuals who graciously offered their service in the United States Armed Services.
