Issue Position: Government Reform

Issue Position

Date: Jan. 1, 2012

We live in the 21st century and yet our state government still operates under a 19th century structure and mentality. It's a problem that infects our state at so many different levels, whether it be the fact that we have multiple agencies and programs doing the same thing which is of course wasteful and inefficient. A true reform effort will ultimately make our government structure more accountable to the taxpayer. As a result, no longer will decisions be made in back rooms by a select few, and the finger pointing and the evasive maneuvering and avoidance of responsibility will have to stop. South Carolina simply cannot compete in today's ever-changing world under this backwards system, and I am determined to help our delegation usher in the changes the people of this state both need and deserve.

We should reduce the number of Constitutional Officers by passing a constitutional amendment that would allow voters to decide our structure of government. I believe voters want an Executive Branch they can hold accountable for results. We should allow voters the opportunity to reduce our state's nine constitutional positions to the national average of four elected in other states.

A Governor and Lieutenant Governor who run on the same ticket much the same as the President and Vice President do at the national level. This issue will also ultimately be determined by the voters through a referendum question.
