Illegal immigration is a major problem for our workforce and is environmentally unsustainable. But desperate people will continue to cross our borders as long as greedy employers are allowed to get away with paying them pennies rather than hiring Americans at fair, livable wages. Accordingly, we must increase fines and enforcement against such unscrupulous employers. We must also take a look at the bigger picture, including our country's role in exacerbating these problems. "Free Trade" agreements such as NAFTA and the WTO have led to the destabilazation of poorer countries and millions of American jobs moving abroad.
