Congressman Steve Scalise today spoke at the Jewish Federation of North America General Assembly in New Orleans. More than 3,000 participants are in New Orleans for the General Assembly.
"While much is said about the partisan divide that exists in Washington, one area where Congress shares strong bipartisanship is in America's unwavering support of Israel," Scalise said. "Last August I had the privilege of traveling to Israel with 24 other Members of Congress, and was able to meet with Prime Minister Netanyahu and see first hand the threats they face on a daily basis and the importance of America standing alongside Israel in defending their right to exist as a Jewish state. As a cosponsor of the Iran Sanctions Act, it is important that the new Republican majority in the House press the State Department to strongly enforce real sanctions against Iran and prevent them from developing nuclear weapons capabilities.
"After Hurricane Katrina the Jewish Federation raised more than $28 million to help New Orleans recover, and more than 6,000 Hillel students gave up their spring, summer and winter breaks to help us rebuild. Your generosity to Southeast Louisiana will not be forgotten, and I am honored to welcome the Jewish Federations of North America to New Orleans for their 2010 General Assembly. I firmly believe this assembly will continue to promote the values of peace, charity and justice in the years to come."
