Representative Bales is a "watchdog" over taxes--eliminating waste and making every penny work for you. He is ever mindful of the needs of District #80 and works to make sure that the district gets its share of the existing tax pie. Raising taxes when we have one of the highest unemployment rates in the nation is NOT an option--the exception being one thing only, raising cigarette taxes. To Jimmy this is a no-brainer because an increase in a cigarette tax will decrease the number of persons starting to smoke as well as decrease the number already smoking. According to doctors, this would cause a huge improvement in the health of citizens--including the health of those who have never smoked but are receiving carcinogenic passive smoke. Jimmy would be thrilled if the increase in cigarette taxes did not raise a nickel because that would mean everyone had quit smoking; however, being realistic, an increase in cigarette taxes will mean an increase in revenues and he proposes that the money raised would go equally to health care and education. Although he voted for a one dollar tax increase, he had to settle for a thirty cent increase on cigarettes in the House. In past years Jimmy has voted for over $106 million in tax cuts--elimination of tax on grocery store food, car tax cuts, property tax cuts and caps, and tax free holidays.
