House Republican Whip Eric Cantor (R-VA) today issued the following statement after learning that Republican Conference Chairman Mike Pence would not seek a second term:
"I'd like to thank Mike Pence for his work as Chairman of the Republican Conference and wish him the best as he continues to represent the people of Indiana and decides his next step.
"Moving forward, I believe that there is no better choice than Jeb Hensarling to serve as the next Chairman of the House Republican Conference. Over the last few years, there are few who have done as much for the Republican team as Jeb. His principled approach to limited government is unquestioned; he has shown a tireless commitment to building a new Republican majority; and he is an extremely effective communicator on the issues that are most important to Americans--jobs, the economy, and unsustainable federal spending. I believe that these attributes, combined with his dedication to the Members of our Conference, make him uniquely qualified to serve as our Chairman in the 112th Congress.
"Our majority must produce results so that we can get America back to opportunity, responsibility, and success, which is why I am proudly supporting my friend, Jeb Hensarling, to become the next Chairman of the House Republican Conference."
