Every American deserves quality affordable health care. The Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act passed by the Congress will extend coverage to 32 million Americans and will reduce our deficit by $143 billion dollars over the next decade, and $1.2 trillion in additional deficit reduction over the following 10 years. But that is just the beginning.
For the first time, American's with pre-existing conditions will be covered, and Americans won't have to worry about losing their health care if they lose their job or move across state lines. Our seniors no longer have to worry about falling into the donut hole. Instead, they received a credit towards closing the donut hole on our way to total elimination.
Health care reform has greatly improved the benefits for seniors, including the elimination of out of pocket costs for preventative care. It will extend the solvency of Medicare for another 10 years. However, there still needs to be significant prescription drug reform, and Medicare should be allowed to negotiate for lower prescription drug costs.
