Blog: Follow Lynn Woolsey's Campaign Money Trail

Statement

Ask yourself who really represents the people? The FEC disclosure reports reveal the answer. In other words, simply follow the money trail donated to my opponent or myself.

My campaign is funded by individuals and unincorporated small business from this area. The political party at the state and national levels hasn't provided support, and local GOP organizations contributed just $2,000. I may have an (R) behind my name, but my support comes from you, the people, not from a party machine -- or a former president. The national union leaders and lobbyists contribute fat checks to my opponent through their political action committees expecting, yes, favors. I'm not beholden to any special interest, period! Unlike the 18-year incumbent, I'm the candidate who's in a position to truly, independently represent the people of this district.

In this tough, prolonged recession, times are hard for many, and we appreciate every contribution, no matter what the size. But our greatest riches are our volunteers. An even greater commodity is the time our volunteers give to this campaign. Trust, respect and individual empowerment are more precious than money. Why? It allows us to reinvent ourselves and adapt, making use of alternative and less expensive campaign methods than TV ads. They've joined this campaign because they believe, as I do, that the individual they send to Congress should truly represent the will of the people (not corporations, not union leadership, not political parties). When was the last time we had a member of the House who didn't just tell us what they were going to do but actually asked us what we wanted them to do?

No doubt I'm considered the underdog in this election. But I welcome that because I have trust in the judgment of the residents of Sonoma and Marin Counties. I've spoken to so many of them, and they've let me know what needs to be done to fix Washington. So, while special interests and political bigwigs reach out to my opponent, I pledge to keep reaching out to the people. I want to empower you, the individual, forging the partnership of mutual respect that can lead us to renewed confidence and prosperity.
