Governor Bill Richardson today applauded the news that Freeport-McMoran will restart operations at the Chino Mine in Hurley. Freeport-McMoran CEO Red Conger called Governor Richardson this morning to inform him of the news and to tell him that the company is looking to create 570 new jobs and plans to start hiring right away.
"This is great news for New Mexico and especially the Silver City area, which has been hit so hard by the national recession," Governor Richardson said. "I am pleased that Freeport-McMoran is ready to start hiring right away, putting hundreds of New Mexicans to work. Copper mining has always been a vital economic driver in Southwestern New Mexico, and this is going to be a major boost to the area's economy."
