United States Senator Mary L. Landrieu, D-La., welcomed today's announcement that Knauf Plasterboard Tianjin Co. (KPT) has agreed to repair 300 homes in Louisiana and three other states as part of a pilot program.

"The partial settlement announced today provides a ray of light to the thousands of homeowners who have seen their dream homes turn into a nightmare," Sen. Landrieu said. "This is the first piece of good news that many of these families have received since this problem first arose two years ago. I'm encouraged by the outline of the settlement, but recognize there is still much work to be done.

"I'm going to redouble my efforts in Washington to make sure trade laws are fair and that defective materials such as this, particularly those produced by foreign companies, cannot be dumped into the United States. I will also continue my work with Consumer Product Safety Commission Chairman Inez Tenenbaum to fully identify the scope of the problem and possible solutions for impacted families."

Earlier today, the parties involved in the Chinese Drywall multi-district litigation (MDL) case in New Orleans announced a demonstration home remediation program. This program, which will be funded by KPT and various builders, suppliers and insurers, will pay for the removal and remediation of up to 300 homes with KPT drywall in Alabama, Florida, Louisiana and Mississippi. The purpose of the demonstration remediation project is to establish a model for the resolution of the KPT drywall issue. This pilot program is based in part on remediation and inspection guidance issued by the Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC).
