Blog: Obama, Democrats Betray LGBT Voters

Statement

The Obama administration has just announced that it will ask the U.S. Court of Appeals for the 9th circuit to suspend an injunction that would overturn the military's "Don't Ask, Don't Tell" policy. There are many ironies here for LGBT voters that supported Barack Obama and the Democrats. One is that the administration has broken yet another promise; the other is that it was the Log Cabin Republicans who won the lawsuit.

My own position is that I believe the military should complete its review of the DADT policy before the politicians in Congress or the judges on the federal bench get involved. Only then would I vote to repeal DADT. If anyone is to intervene, it should be the president himself, in his role as commander-in-chief. The Log Cabin Republicans, in endorsing me a month ago, called my position a "procedurally conservative approach."

That may not be an approach that all LGBT voters (or all Log Cabin Republicans) agree with. Yet at least they can be sure of where I stand. This election is an opportunity for LGBT voters to protest being taken for granted by the Obama administration. It is also a chance to look beyond the empty promises being made by incumbent Democrats and to evaluate candidates on other issues that concern LGBT voters and all Americans.
