When toxic power plants threatened our environment and the health of New Yorkers with skyrocketing asthma and emphysema rates, Mike Gianaris led the charge to shut them down. He was instrumental in the closing of New York's single largest polluter -- the Polletti Power Plant in Queens. This accomplishment alone will lead to a reduction in our state's toxic emissions by over 250,000 pounds of pollution per year.
But he didn't stop there. As a firm believer in environmental justice, Mike showed that he is not afraid to stand up to powerful interests when he successfully sued the State to ensure that new polluters are not located in our most vulnerable neighborhoods and wrote a law to push power companies to clean up their acts.
