Statement by Governor Jan Brewer

Statement

Date: Oct. 22, 2010
Location: Phoenix, AZ

Governor Jan Brewer announced today that she will attend the court hearing in the case of United States of America v. State of Arizona and Janice K. Brewer concerning the State of Arizona's appeal of the order enjoining portions of SB 1070. The hearing will be before the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit in San Francisco, California on Monday, November 1, 2010 from 9:00 a.m. to 10:00 a.m. Each side will have one-half hour to present its arguments.

"I will personally attend this hearing on behalf of the overwhelming majority of citizens who support the rule of law," said Governor Brewer. "I am steadfast in my belief that States have the sovereign right to enforce immigration laws consistent with federal immigration laws. The overwhelming support the State of Arizona and I have received from across America in this fight with the federal government to reestablish the rule of law in Arizona has been truly gratifying."

"America is not going to sit back and allow the ongoing federal failures to continue. We are a nation of laws and we believe they need to be enforced. If the federal government wants to be in charge of illegal immigration and they want no help from states, it then needs to do its job. Arizona would not be faced with this problem if the federal government honored its responsibilities."
