Few realize that Health Maintenance Organizations (HMOs), the companies that drive a wedge between the patient and his doctor, were a product of federal legislation. The HMO Act of 1973 essentially granted privileges to certain corporations and this led to a distortion of the market. This has caused higher prices, less coverage, and more bureaucracy. This is what happens when Big Government manages health care.
When the costs go up the government makes it virtually impossible for the needy in this country to buy Health coverage. But this was not the case before government intervention. Just as very few in this country go without shoes or food so too would few go without health care if it weren't for the government's intervention.
I believe it is time our state to provide better health care for all and recent heath care legislation does not help but will only hurt the poor. I would propose legislation that would nullify the law and create legislation that would have free market solutions to health care that would be cheaper and better for all Rhode Islanders.
