Issue Position: Local Tax Relief

Issue Position

Ryan believes that we must work to dedicate dollars to our local communities in order to provide much needed local tax relief. Reducing these taxes is a focal point and prioirty in Ryan's "Build Rhode Island" plan that seeks to make the state competitive in the long-term. With the reduction of the exemption on local motor vehicle taxes, local communities have again been forced to rely on locally levied funds to pay for town services. According to recent studies, Rhode Island is more reliant on local property taxes than many states across the country. The assembly must work to make Rhode Island's local property competitive. These taxes impact every resident and business hampering growth. Property taxes account for 51%of state and local taxes paid by businesses in Rhode Island, one of the highest percentages nationally, compared to the national average of 35.5%. Action must be taken.
