Senator Sieben supports Minnesota's current tradition of employing well-trained licensed teachers in classrooms.
Senator Sieben believes that teachers are professionals and should be treated as such. The current high standards for teacher licensing have enabled Minnesota to consistently rank at the top for education standards. Lessening the requirements for licensure could be damaging to the academic integrity of Minnesota's schools.
Senator Sieben worked to secure funding and support for South St. Paul Schools' International Baccalaureate (IB) program. IB is a rigorous curriculum program that actively involves parents and community to prepare students to be global citizens.
Working to Strengthen Classroom Windows
Last session Senator Sieben brought forward language requiring school districts to take glass security into account when submitting plans for new schools to the Minnesota Department of Education. Senator Sieben believes this is a smart step toward ensuring the safety of students and staff in Minnesota schools, especially after the events at Hastings Middle School last spring.
Senator Sieben continues to work on this issue over the interim to find a workable solution to ensure students are protected.
