Jim knows that great public schools are critical to our quality of life in Howard County, which is why he has been a strong proponent of public education in the Maryland Senate.
As Howard County Executive, he made record local investments in our public schools. As our Senator, he protected State funds that benefit our local schools and voted for better accountability in the classroom, so that Howard County students receive a world class education.
That investment is paying off. Maryland's public schools have been ranked #1 in the nation for two years in a row by Education Week magazine. Maryland students outperform their peers nationally on Advanced Placement exams. We are home to one of the best educated workforces in the nation -- something that attracts jobs to Howard County.
This year, Jim voted for educational reforms designed to increase accountability and improve the quality of instruction in the classroom. To bolster Maryland's chances in the federal Race to the Top program, Jim voted to extend the amount of time it takes teachers to receive tenure and to improve teacher mentorship programs.
Jim understands that our students and teachers need modern classrooms. First as County Executive and now as our Senator, he has made school construction and renovation a priority. In the past four years, he secured $63.4 million in State funds for school construction projects in Howard County.
