Being one of the only State Legislators who is a full time farmer, I have introduced many pieces of legislation specifically aimed at helping the farming community. As a farmer I realize the importance of protecting our agriculture industry. By helping to enact policies that are friendly to the agriculture industry I hope to help Maryland continue to be a leader in the agriculture industry.
During the previous legislative session I introduced House Bill 1289 and 1293 specifically aimed at the agriculture industry. If passed, HB 1289 would have altered the determination of the Maryland estate tax to exclude for the value of the gross estate the value of real property that is subject to a perpetual agricultural preservation easement. HB 1293, would have required the State Department of Assessment and Taxation (SDAT) to send a specified notice of the $100.00 annual report filing fee for family farms within a specific time after the filing of a personal property tax return that reports tangible personal property used for agricultural purposes.
