A solid transportation infrastructure is critically important to the economic development of South Carolina, both in attracting companies to locate in our state and in attracting visitors to participate in our state's largest industry: tourism.
As the senior member of the SC Congressional House Delegation on the Transportation and Infrastructure Committee, I am working with other members of the House delegation to get South Carolina's fair share of federal highway funds. Currently, South Carolina only receives about 90 percent of the fuel tax dollars it sends to Washington. This issue is particularly important now because budget cuts at the state level have made it difficult for the South Carolina Department of Transportation (SCDOT) to meet our transportation needs.
I am also a strong proponent of bringing a high-speed rail system to South Carolina. The South is the fastest growing region in the country but too often our transportation infrastructure has not kept pace. As our population continues to grow, high-speed rail access combined with an adequate system of safe roads and bridges will help secure our economic future and ensure the safety of our citizens.
