LeMieux: Homeowners with Contaminated Drywall Can Apply for Tax Deduction

Press Release

Location: Washington, DC

U.S. Senator George LeMieux (R-FL) today announced the IRS will allow tax relief for homeowners affected by contaminated drywall. Identified as a casualty loss, homeowners will be able to submit with their yearly taxes a deduction of costs associated with house repairs due to drywall damage. Late last year, Senator LeMieux sent a letter to the IRS requesting the right for homeowners with corrosive drywall to claim a casualty loss deduction for related losses.

"Homeowners affected by contaminated drywall have been waiting too long for relief. This allowance is welcome news," LeMieux said. "Homeowners with contaminated drywall have had to endure a nightmare. This is an element of relief that will help alleviate at least a portion of the burden homeowners have endured."
