Smith on the 9-11 Report

Rep. Smith issued the following statement on the release of the 9-11 Commission report:

"The report strongly implies that Congress did not pass legislation to keep Americans safe from terrorism. That is false.

"In 1996 Congress passed an immigration reform law that included a comprehensive entry-exit system designed to tell us who is entering our country and if they have overstayed their Visas. It also mandated federal standards for state driver licenses and birth certificates.

"If the law had been enforced by the previous administration it might have prevented some of the September 11th terrorists from boarding their flights or entering our country. "

Rep. Smith is a member of the House Judiciary Committee and the House Select Committee on Homeland Security.
