Smith on Sandy Berger: An Inexcusable Act

Rep. Smith issued the following statement regarding former Clinton National Security Advisor Sandy Berger:

"Sandy Berger's admission that he removed classified intelligence documents from a secure room in preparation for the 9-11 Commission hearings is inexcusable.

"Given his prior government service, Mr. Berger knows this is a serious breach of our national security. His behavior again calls into question how the Clinton administration responded to terrorist attacks and threats.

"A former National Security Advisor understands there is no such thing as 'inadvertently' taking highly classified government documents to an unsecured location.

"Mr. Berger should co-operate fully with the Department of Justice investigation, and if necessary, be held accountable for this dangerous behavior."

Rep. Smith is a member of the House Judiciary Committee and the House Select Committee on Homeland Security.
