To reduce our dependence on foreign oil, we must invest in clean renewable energy technologies at home. I support federal funding toward alternative energy sources such as wind, solar, and hydrogen fuel cell power.
I voted to establish a federal standard requiring utilities to generate 15% of all power from renewable sources. I also supported a bill requiring increased fuel efficiency standards for automobiles.
As we have seen with the epic environmental disaster following the explosion of the Deepwater Horizon oil rig, offshore drilling poses a threat to our economy and our environment.
I support greater transparency requirements for those federal agencies that regulate gas and oil drilling. I also support changing existing law to ensure that oil companies responsible for a spill cover 100% of the cleanup costs and any damages caused to the environment.
