"The causes of our nation's growing budget deficit are many: two wars paid for on the credit card, an unfunded Medicare prescription drug program and an unprecedented economic recession that reduced revenues while adding budgetary burdens. Whatever the causes, it is clear that our deficit's growth is unsustainable and poses great risks to the future health of our economy. It is long past time for the federal government to make the tough choices every Vermont family faces to ensure that it no longer spends what it does not have."

Congressman Welch:

*Successfully passed "pay-as-you-go" legislation (PAYGO) that requires Congress to pay for new spending and entitlement programs either by cutting spending or increasing revenue.

*Co-founded the House Deficit Reduction Working Group, a five-member caucus devoted to identifying specific budget cuts to reduce the deficit. Welch proposed cuts to unnecessary weapons systems that would save taxpayers $2.6 billion in 2011.

*Supported the creation of the bipartisan National Commission on Fiscal Responsibility and Reform, which is charged with proposing long-term solutions to the nation's fiscal challenges.
