As a result of the worst recession since the Great Depression, school systems across the country faced substantial budget shortfalls. I voted to invest in our schools and provide funding that helped students in Connecticut keep their teachers and have the resources they need to learn. I also helped pass the largest investment in student aid in history -- at no expense to taxpayers. The legislation, which is now law, reforms our federal student loan system and invests $77 billion of the $87 billion in savings into making college more affordable for middle class American families.
