Law Enforcement and Public Safety
As a former Mayor, I've worked closely with some of our country's bravest law enforcement and emergency personnel. They help keep our neighborhoods safe, and are our first line of defense during any emergency. As an original member of the Homeland Security Committee one of my top priorities is to ensure that our first responders receive everything they need to help keep our communities safe and our country secure. I will continue to fight to ensure that funding for our police officers, fire fighters and emergency medical technicians remains a priority for the federal government.
In 1999, I introduced the "Firefighter Investment and Response Enhancement (FIRE) Act," which authorized the federal government to provide grant money to local fire departments to hire more fire fighters, buy needed equipment and receive specialized training. The FIRE grant program has been incredibly successful, and fire departments across the country, large and small, volunteer and paid, have been able to make much needed equipment purchases like new fire trucks, or provide the latest training to their personal. Cities and towns across New Jersey and in the 8th district have been able to take advantage of the program as well, and this year we were able to fund the entire program at $500 million dollars.
