U.S. Senator George LeMieux (R-FL) today made the following statement in response to reports that the Government of Colombia's announcement they killed Manuel Julio Suarez Rojas, also known as "el Mono Jojoy' and the second in command of the FARC. He was the FARC's top military leader and the terrorist group's highest ranking member to be eliminated since the death of "Raul Reyes' in 2008.
"I commend President Santos and the Colombian Armed Forces for the success of this operation. The death of "El Mono Jojoy' is the biggest blow against the FARC in the organization's history. He had been accused of being involved in several acts of terrorism, including the assassination of two American missionaries in 1995. The result of this operation is evidence of the professionalism of the Colombian Armed Forces, the effectiveness of our sustained bilateral cooperation and the need for Colombia's neighbors to take assertive action against the FARC presence in their territories. I call on the FARC to release all of its hostages, stop using violence and terror, and accept the Colombian Government's offer for a credible peace dialogue. "
